Why is Ushuaia called the “End of the World”?

Ushuaia is widely known as the “End of the World” because it is the southernmost city on the planet. It sits at the southern tip of South America, on the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, along the Beagle Channel on the border between Argentina and Chile.

During the Age of Exploration, Ushuaia was the last stop before Antarctica and a key port for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific. It also served for years as a penal colony, whose inmates helped build essential infrastructure.

Today, Ushuaia attracts travelers eager to explore the rugged landscapes of Tierra del Fuego and the southernmost reaches of the continent. Visitors can take boat tours on the Beagle Channel, hike in nearby mountains, see penguin colonies, and embark on cruises to Antarctica. The “End of the World” nickname has become an iconic part of the region’s identity and tourism appeal.
